Flattened ears at the grooming table usually come before anything else does. The ears rotate back and settle low against the head, and that is your cat saying the handling has gone far enough. Cats rarely escalate without warning first. Watch the ears, then give a pause and let the cat choose to settle again. Most of them do, once the pressure lifts.

A quick daily comb through the muzzle and beard keeps those mats from setting in. Most of these dogs come in about every six weeks, clipped or hand-stripped. If combing turns into a fight, slow down and do a little at a time.
