The tail in the week the coat changes
The tail tells me before the rest of the dog does. This week a shepherd mix came in with her tail held a little lower than usual, and when I ran the dryer down her back the coat lifted in soft clouds. Nothing wrong with her. Fall just loosened what summer had been holding onto. We took our time, and she left with the same tail height she came in with.

Eskimo coat coming out on the table
An American Eskimo Dog left a white outline of himself on the table today. Dense double coat, heavy shed, and November is when the undercoat lets go. Six weeks is the usual interval for this breed, and fall is the reason. The top coat stays show white while the fluff underneath piles up in drifts.
